R1

R1 is a mobile mapping system designed to create a hybrid high definition (HD) map for self-driving vehicles. The hybrid HD maps based on NAVER’s proprietary mapping solution are HD maps created by organically integrating the information retrieved from preexisting precision aerial photographs, and the point cloud information collected by an R1 vehicle. Both the 2D and 3D data are processed with a unique algorithm that automatically extracts the features required to draw the HD maps. This reduces the production costs compared to conventional MMS devices while ensuring the same level of accuracy and recency.

MOBILE MAPPING SYSTEM

HD maps are essential for autonomous vehicles to precisely detemine locations and search for optimal routes. Based on unique aerial 3D mapping technology in combination with lightweight MMS system R1, NAVER is developing hybrid HD maps that maintain the high level of accuracy required but at lower cost. First, true-ortho photos are generated from aerial images to extract the road networks and road marking features sing AI technology. The resulting spatial HD data forms the foundation of our unique hybrid HD map. Next, R1 collects point clouds on top of the HD map while on the move. NAVER is developing centimeter-level localization technology by integrating sensor fusion data into our HD maps, for use in areas where high-rise buildings interfere with GPS signals. Its hybrid HD map paves the way to more advanced research on autonomous vehicles. 








MAXIMIZING THE FIELD OF VIEW

R1 is equipped with 32-channel LiDAR, four 16-channel LiDARs, 1-channel LiDAR, 8 cameras, and 2 antennas. The surfaces are designed to maximize the field of view of LiDARs and cameras while maintaining a sleek design.

As more diverse self-driving machines and services are introduced, the importance of HD maps will only increase. More advanced and diversified HD-based algorithms can also be expected to appear. Through the Hybrid HD Mapping technology, we hope to introduce a new HD map solution which satisfies the needs of both maintaining data accuracy and keeping production costs reasonable.
